I would like to share an Interview I gave to a graduate student a couple of years ago about my experiences and my definition of leadership, as well as about some other aspects of leadership. By way of introduction, my name is Art Battiste. I presently am the principal consultant and general manager for a growing "strategic services" and public opinion and market research consulting company, one of the largest independent companies in Western Canada. My background is as follows: Native of Calrsbad, New Mexico - high school and university in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan Canada following family relocation. Graduate in Liberal Arts and Education. Pursued a career as a civil servant with provincial (state) and federal governments over a period of 28 years. During my career, became - manager,
- executive manager,
- and deputy minister (under secretary), as well as
president and chairman of the board of a major high technology government-owned corporation.
Posts held include - Secretary of Indian and Native Affairs,
- Chief Operating Officer of Saskatchewan Employment Development Agency,
- Corporate Secretary and Vice President of Saskatchewan Property Management Corporation,
- Director General of Management Information (including security), Secretary of State Department,
- Constitutional Negotiator for a Constitutional Law Division of a Department of Justice,
- Deputy Minister of Economic Development and Trade,
- Deputy Minister of Tourism and Culture,
- President of InNovaCorp, and
- other posts, all equally interesting and exciting.
I became known for my leadership and motivational style of management. I continue to give seminars and presentations on leadership, employment search for university students, life as a civil servant, and other bizarre topics. I use the interview I gave as the core of much of what I write and speak about. Interview
